Music Ministry
While no one can define how music transforms our communal worship, no one can deny that it happens. Whether it is the quietest meditation or the most triumphant anthem, music can do what ordinary words may be powerless to accomplish by reaching into our souls and moving us, helping us connect with the divine and lifting us out of ourselves to see God. Its theology, expressed in text and melody, informs and shapes us as Christians. Through musical expression, we are invited to serenade the God whose praises echo through the silent music of all creation.
Music is an integral part of our worship, and you are welcome and invited to become a part of our ministry. We are always excited to have new members in our choral and instrumental ensembles and as vocal and instrumental soloists. Whatever your age - whether your abilities are professional or amateur and whether your interests are traditional or contemporary - there's a place for you!
Congregational Singing: At both the 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. services, the singing of hymns is a vital part of our worship experience, accompanied by piano and often enhanced by percussion, guitar, cello, and violin instrumentals.
Sanctuary Choirs: From September until mid-June, our choirs lead the congregational hymns and sing songs and anthems chosen to inspire and relate to the worship focus.
Leading the 8:30 a.m. service is the Chancel Choir; the Heaven Sent Choir leads the 10:00 a.m. service; and, on occasion, members from each choir join together to sing in both services. The choirs also prepare special music for the Advent season. We welcome anyone who shares our passion for singing with a choir in worship. Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings (Chancel, 6:15-7:15p, and Heaven Sent, 7:30-8:30p). Each choir also meets for warm-up on Sunday mornings at 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., respectively.
Children's Choirs: Our two children's choirs sing in worship about four times a year, and the music is exciting, easy to learn, and selected for its memorable and meaningful spiritual message. From September until mid-June, rehearsals for the Asbury Choir (pre-school - 2d grade) and Sing+ (3d - 6th grades) are on Sundays after our 10:00 a.m. worship service.
Youth: The youth participate in our musical worship through solos and in various ensembles as dictated by interest and time, and the church loves their musical offerings!
Instruments: Our worship is enriched by instrumental music - piano, worship band (Durable View), ensembles (including The Jubilation Ensemble), and solos. If you play an instrument and wish to explore the possibility of playing in worship or for other events, please contact us.
